The reed poker can be used to open a pipe chanter reed very, very slightly to restore clarity and tone, after the break-in period. The tool goes through the staple of the reed, then you gently continue another 1-2 mm, opening the staple just a bit. According to the directions, the poker can be helpful when a reed becomes too easy, chirps, or sounds thin. Naturally, great care should be taken when modifying a reed, and damage or undesired results can occur with any type of manipulation. The poker is precise and intuitive to use. Yellow hemp can be used on all bagpipes joints. When using plain yellow hemp, be careful not add too much. The hemp swells when it absorbs moisture and can lock or split joints that are over-hemped.
