Master the Canister: Getting The Most From Your Ross Canister System
Since its debut, the Ross Canister System has proved a top-seller among moisture control products. Compatible with all zippered pipe bags and offering overall bagpipe moisture control, the canister system is used by pipers of all levels to achieve a more stable instrument. The principle of the system is simple, but there are several things you can do to optimize its performance and to care for your pipes:
Before Playing: Blow dust off the canister before each playing session.
After Playing: Remove canister and keep in a sealed plastic bag to avoid over-drying of the bagpipe while in the case. (Leave the hoses attached to the lid, and remove just the canister).
Alternate: Alternate canisters so each has time to dry. If the canisters retain moisture, they won't be able to draw as much moisture when you're playing, making them less effective.
Position: Attach the hoses so the canister will sit vertically in the bag when you play. You can turn the hoses on the lid to make positioning adjustments.
Screen: Periodically, screen the granules to remove small chips.
Oil: If you have wood pipes, be sure to oil more frequently because of the constant dry air. This easy preventative maintenance can keep wood from cracking and help the pipes sound their best.
Vacuum: (Quarterly) Carefully vacuum out the pipe bag to remove dust and small particles.
Clean Reeds: (Quarterly) During quarterly maintenance, at least, inspect your drone reeds closely and remove any dust.
